So what is a dirt cheap DC-DC converter that can support both the push button power-on and the soft power-off?
Can it work with a CR2032 or similar to get the needed startup current?

Any idea what is causing those startup current spikes? Maybe I can get Espressif to look at them.

Can you get the current consumption during boot on a scope trace or something? I will send it to Espressif and see what they say. 300mA spikes are very high.

Nice idea :) Sprite_tm please, share you circuit. Question: Why you need ESP-12? I think 01 is enough for single button :)

I think Espressif said it's because the ESP recalibrates the RF bit each startup. You can tell it to only do that every Nth startup, but I doubt entirely disabling it is gonna work, so you still need to design for those spikes.

For a better boost converter: A quick search turned up eg. the LT1308, which may be able to do this.

I'll share the circuit once I finish writing up the article about it. I'll have a pretty busy week this week, so it's probably going to be the next week.
