Reset vs repower

I have been using the ESP8266 for several years. However recently i faced a connection problem that can't be solved without repowering the ESP module. I tried with ESP.reset and ESP.restart in several manners without success (the module is really restarting). I tried the hard reset as well without success. I have to power off the module then power it back on to solve this connection issue...
Does anyone know what is the difference between repowering and resetting the module? Maybe some registers values...
