I've reflashed the board several times and but nothing changes. So I'm beginning to think that the bootloader has been corrupted. Is that possible?

Are there any other possible issues?

Why 9600? Have you tried 115200 or other speeds? Before flashing a new ESP8266, did you just try running it with the default AT firmware it comes with?

If you are able to flash the ESP-01 and the flasher doesn't report a problem, the bootloader is probably OK.

Over the last several months, I've done just about everything imaginable to my ESP-01s, and I haven't managed to brick one yet. They are tough little guys.

9600 is the baudrate of NodeMCU which I've been running. 115200 also produces gabled data.
