I would like to control everything with a stand along esp8266-03 so i probably need to program it?

this is a good question. I'm facing the same dilemma. I also would like to use the ESP8266 to read some digital sensors and display it on web. But I get lost with so many firmware's available. Not really sure what their main differences and witch sould I use to this project.
