Guys is all this still necessary after they made the SDK publicly available?

Nope, if you use the gcc compiler there's no need for the license.
You might need the xtensa-lib headers though.

I have compiled the AT and IOT_demo examples with the official dev image and official SDK with no other software.

Yes I too confirm that, was able to build the demo app.
anyone knows how to launch the IDE? i am still trying to pickup the pieces here as I am more of a VisualStudio, Arduino IDE and Microship IDE.
