OK, makes sense. Yet still I wonder: Can I reroute the TX/RX to other GPIOs?

I assume the pins are not connected (i.e left side D1 is not hard wired to right side D1 ?)

Yes they are hardwired. So you would have to cut the relevant trace and rewire to your requirements.
