#13392 I can probably get less current draw too - it's mostly burned in a pull-up resistor that can be a bit higher if need be. With 1.5uA the thing alreadly will last for years, so I think it's good enough. #13593 This boost circuit looks like it would work to get the ESP8266 running off from a single cell battery.

It has the button for start, the boost to 3.3V and the soft power off. All done with cheap parts since the MCU is used to keep the boost running.

#13677 Hehe, that boost converter is mine :) I'd use an off-the-shelf dc-dc-chip in this case; I don't think my design could source the 300mA spikes the ESP can sink on startup.

It looks like that the ESP eats up about 0.4Ws per button press, on my non-encrypted WiFi network connecting to a local server that is. If it's possible to completely drain the 180mAh battery that I use now, that should mean several thousand button presses can be done before the battery needs charging/changing.
