BTW, I was disconnecting GPIO0 from GND after uploading new firmware.

You can still use GPIO0 for other purposes, such driving a relay, but you have to remind that it need to be HIGH at power-up/reset, so IDLE state been HIGH, you can control a relay by placing the output to LOW, and use a PNP driver or dual N-MOSFET (one for power and one to invert the state)
